Most Popular Featured Workspaces in 2010

Lifehacker:

Lifehacker reader Overset didn’t just buy a set of shelf brackets and a shelf to make his wall-mounted desk—he hand cut and carved the brackets, desk, and shelving out of locally grown wood. All the cables for his workspace are routed through the wall for a tidy look [...]

There were sixteen profiled and I like this the best. Triple monitors mounted to the wall. Simple and productive.

Barnes & Noble Nook Color to get Android 2.2 Update

The Register:

The NOOKcolor e-reader, from Barnes & Noble, is going to get Android 2.2 (Froyo) next month, very nearly turning the $250 e-reader into a usable tablet computer.

We say very nearly, because it seems that Google’s Android Marketplace won’t be available on the NOOKcolor, which will instead get its own application store run by Barnes & Noble.

What would prevent the Nook Color from being upgraded to the tablet-oriented version of Android: Honeycomb? But even with the latest and greatest Android OS the Nook Color won’t be fast enough to be used as a full-blown tablet. The lag between when you touch and when it responds will drive you nuts. As an e-reader I’m sure the Nook Color will do just fine, but that’s not why you’re hoping to get to Android 2.2 and beyond…

Microvision ShowWX+ Pico Projector Review

CrunchGear:

Its resolution is 848×480, which is perfectly fine for most TV shows and movies.

The trouble for me with the ShowWX is really in the image itself. Right off the bat it’s clear that it’s not particularly bright [...]

There’s something about the image, though, that bugs me. It has a transparent, shimmery quality to it [...]

Overall I’m quite impressed with what these little pico projectors can do, despite their imperfections. But a shimmery picture might be a show stopper.

Samsung Sells 9.3 Million Galaxy S Smartphones

The Chosunilbo:

The Galaxy S is also on track to become the first Android-powered smartphone to hit the 10 million mark in worldwide sales by the end of this month, as its cumulative sales reached 9.3 million units as of Friday.

Impressive.

Thin and Sexy

John Dvorak at PCMag:

Every so often, I think about the success of a number of Apple products and the one that used to baffle me the most was the iPad. That was until I realized that the elements that made iPad a success were always there, but nobody but Apple seemed to understand those elements. Two words: thin and sexy.

Toshiba REGZA 40WL753 Review

TrustedReviews:

[...] while the 40WL753 is capable of producing occasionally spectacular pictures, they’re ultimately defined – for us movie and console game lovers, at least – by that dreaded backlight inconsistency. So much so that we actually felt tense while watching films as we found ourselves waiting for the backlight flaws to suddenly pop up.

The 40WL753 is Toshiba’s flagship 40-inch LCD TV and priced at just £700, but fails to impress due to backlight inconsistency.

Samsung SF510 Review

Laptop:

The glossy 15.6-inch, LED-backlit display’s 1366 x 768 resolution is expected in this price range. Overall, colors were bright, blacks deep, and pixels smooth in HD content, making for an enjoyable experience when watching videos or working in Word. We just wish we didn’t have to tilt the lid back to keep the image from washing out.

For me the display is the most important component on a notebook PC and it seems the Samsung SF510 has two strikes against it: low pixel count and narrow viewing angles. For a large 15.6-inch LCD the pixel format should be 1440×900 or more and viewing angles should be much better.

Toshiba 55WX800U Review

HDTV Solutions:

The 240Hz LED edge-lit Toshiba 55WX800U’s picture quality when displaying 2D images is excellent. And its NetTV menu of Internet streaming partners is top notch. If only its 3D performance was as compelling.

Tip: If you are not mounting the TV on the wall, it is better to get a slightly thicker TV with full LED backlight if budget allows. LCD TVs with full LED backlights perform much better than edge-lit counterparts.
