Camera+: Best iPhone Photo App, So Far

sonicBOOOM:

Overall I’m liking Camera+ plus quite a bit. It has almost all of the features that I’d want. I really dig the touch-control for aperture in addition to focus. The only big thing missing is the HDR capability in the built-in camera app, but Camera+ has a lot more going for it that it might become my goto camera app on my iPhone.

enTourage Pocket eDGe: E Ink + LCD Dual Screen eReader

The enTourage Pocket eDGe is a dual-screen e-reader with an E Ink display on the left an a LCD on the right. From what I can tell you can jot down notes on the E Ink display: something that I think all e-book readers should allow you to do. I’m looking at you iPad.

I can imagine myself needing to understand a term more fully and pulling up Wikipedia on the right while still having the page open where I’m reading on the left. I wonder what else it can do. I guess I’ll be finding out at CES.

LG LZ9700: 72-inch LED-Backlit 3D LCD TV

Engadget:

[LG will] be bringing the planet’s largest LED-backlit 3D LCD HDTV to CES 2011 next week, with the LZ9700 handling both 2D and 3D content and offering TruMotion 400Hz [...]

Who cares about 3D? I don’t. But actually, my sister mentioned how fantastic it was to watch How to Train Your Dragon on a 3D TV with active-shutter glasses. I must say I did enjoy watching Avatar in the theaters in 3D, but I also enjoyed watching Avatar in 2D just as much. If you are a 3D fan, and there are only a few of you out there, and if you have the space and the financial wherewithal to purchase the largest 72-inch LED-backlit 3D LCD TV in the world, then maybe the LG LZ9700 is something to look forward to.

Two things: what is with that brownish neck? And Dvorak says 3D is bad for your kid’s optical nerves.

Samsung Galaxy Player at CES 2011

Samsung Hub:

The 9.9mm thick Galaxy Player (YP-GB1) runs on Android 2.2 Froyo OS and features a 1GHz CPU, 4-inch Super Clear LCD screen supporting up to WVGA resolution (800×480), T-DMB, SoundAlive audio enhancing technology, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, 3.2MP rear camera with front facing camera for video calling, GPS, HD video playback, microSD card slot, Android Market and Samsung Apps access and a 1200mAh removable battery.

Where’s 3G??? I thought the Samsung Galaxy Player was going to be the iPod touch with 3G. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. If the Galaxy Player does end up being the Galaxy S without the ability to make regular phone calls, but have 3G like the iPad, this little gadget can unshackle us from the monthly money-sucking vacuum: mandatory voice call minutes.

Rumor: Apple Expects to Sell 20-21 Million iPhones in First Quarter 2011

DigiTimesCult of Mac:

Verizon may be getting a late Christmas present, if a new report proves correct. Apple is planning to ship between 20 million and 21 million iPhones in the first quarter of 2011 – 5 to 6 million of those CDMA-based. (Another 14 million to 15 million of the Apple handsets will reportedly be GSM.)

Taiwan-based component suppliers have informed DigiTimes that Apple’s original shipment target has increased from 19 million to 20-21 million. Maybe Apple thinks the global economy is getting better? Or maybe Apple’s next iPhone will run on LTE networks? I’d be more interested in an iPhone that works on Sprint’s amazingly fast 4G.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260 Review

Engadget:

Okay, so it’s not exactly great for pixel density, but that doesn’t mean we’re not seriously impressed with the anti-glare matte display. Yes, that means there’s no glossiness or reflections, and yes, it’s great! We actually were able to work on the laptop on a sunny day without putting up any sort of shade. Too boot, the display is quite bright and the viewing angles are rather decent — we had no problem sharing the screen in a tight airplane seat with our neighbor. We do have one complaint though — the screen bezel is certainly glossy and can pick up its fair share of fingerprints.

The unique 12.5-inch LCD sports a 1366×768 pixel format. Some brilliant chap thought to make use of a matte display but then had a brain fart and left the bezel glossy.

Archos 101 Internet Tablet Review

Engadget:

We weren’t expecting Gorilla Glass quality here, but both of them are flimsy and when pressed firmly, they start to cave in quite a bit. However, it’s the 1024 x 600-resolution LCD on the 101 that’s the real eye sore — when turned off, the uber glossy panel (we’re talking mirror glossy) is a metalic greenish color.

Greenish color? I have no idea what the cause of that might be, but sure seems yucky. But more importantly you need to be confident that you can use your touch display: a display that caves in when pressed firmly doesn’t inspire confidence at all.

[...] the capacitive displays are actually quite responsive — tapping and swiping lightly was no issue when navigating the OS and we actually found our fingers to slide quite nicely over the glossy coating.

Nicely sliding over a capacitive multitouch display is one thing, for the system to respond instantly is another. I have yet to see an Android tablet that responds without a hint of delay; so far only the iPad does that.

Viewing angles and both the Archos 101 and the 70 were terrible: I am dumbstruck that product designers overlook the need for wide viewing angles on a tablet that will be used both in landscape and portrait orientations! I recommend getting the iPad: you’ll stop worrying about everything else, and get to immerse yourself into all the wonderful content that’s waiting for you download.

Samsung UE32C6000 Review

TrustedReviews:

The first thing that strikes us is a familiar Samsung LED strength: dynamism. By which we mean the raw, almost visceral impact generated by a combination of high brightness levels, extremely fully saturated colours and also, crucially, a satisfying depth to the black colours that give most video images their foundation.

TR rates image quality at 8/10. Here’s the niggle:

First, we detected a trace of backlight inconsistency from time to time [...]

The Samsung UE32C600 is beautiful, but edge-lit LED backlights limit its screen capabilities: dark scenes lack shadow detail and viewing angles are quite narrow at around 70 to 80 degrees. But for £499 the UE32C600 is a solid value. Just don’t expect it to perform like much more expensive TVs that have full LED backlights.

Get Flash Back with Skyfire for iPad

Skyfire Labs:

The “Video” icon enables users to play millions of Flash videos around the web that otherwise do not play on mobile. This unlocks content trapped behind those error messages with question marks and blue Legos by transcoding the Flash content into HTML5 on Skyfire’s servers.

Skyfire is a browser app that lets you get Flash back on the iPad. Well, technically you’re not getting Flash back: Skyfire servers transcode Flash into HTML5, but the bottom line is you get to watch the video you wanted to watch, on your iPad.
