Lenovo S800: Mobile Phone with Translucent Color Display

China News (Chinese) → Cloned In ChinaEngadget: A translucent or even a transparent display could be used for augmented reality applications on a mobile phone: put up the translucent display toward a bunch of stores or a gadget and you get relevant information displayed right there. It would update in real-time, of course. Unfortunately, I don’t think the pretty Lenovo S800 is up to that type of task.

Nintendo Sells 1.5 Million Systems During Black Friday Week

CrunchGear: Nintendo did very well during the Black Friday week. Here is the sales breakdown:

On average that’s 9000 per hour. I was just searching through Amazon and found that you can still buy a Nintendo NES System. There is a used one available for just $39.95!

Disconnect: Brain Disturbing

I’m currently reading the book Disconnect by Devra Davis and wanted to share some rather disturbing information. On page 61:

For the past five years scientists in Moscow have been following two groups of children–one of which uses mobile phones and the other not. [...] The Russian researchers found changes in the working of the brains of cell phone users ranging from decreased capacity to work, increased fatigue, decrease in attention and semantic memory, and significant loss of the ability to tell the difference between different sounds.

There is more, a lot more. I was reading through this chapter and decided that this information needs to be shared. Children have skulls that are much thinner than adults and cell phone radiation can penetrate deeper. I have three children and the findings in this book are opening my eyes to the potential dangers of cell phones. Disconnect on Amazon.

Sony Wants 50% of Japan’s e-Book Reader Market

Reuters:

Sony’s Reader ebook goes on sale on December 10 at about 20,000 yen ($240) for a model with a 5 inch screen or 25,000 yen for a 6 inch screen.

It hopes to sell 300,000 Readers in the first year and win half the domestic market by 2012, Sony Marketing Japan president Nobuki Kurita told reporters.

Competition includes Apple’s iPad and Sharp’s Galapagos. I wonder why Amazon doesn’t offer Japanese titles on its Kindle; if it did Sony might be in for a tough fight.

Super AMOLED Surplus in 2011?

DigiTimesPhone ArenaEngadget: Samsung Mobile Display (SMD) makes the Super AMOLED displays that go into every Samsung branded smartphone. Currently SMD makes 3 million of these per month. Starting June 2011 that number will grow to 30 million per month. But these aren’t regular OLED displays: SMD’s Super AMOLEDs make use of a PenTile Matrix sub-pixel structure pioneered by Clairvoyante and now Nouvoyance after being purchased by Samsung. PenTile Matrix has a 2×2 sub-pixel structure that allows for a visual equivalent pixel format of 800xRGBx480. As far as I know there is no OLED volume production technology that can cram 800xRGBx480 pixels into a 3.5-inch panel.

These reports stating that AU Optronics (AUO), Chimei Innolux (CMI) and other China-based display manufacturers are getting in the mobile OLED display game is absurd. They will not be able to get to 800×480; maybe they are thinking of putting expensive OLED displays into budget smartphones? The only way AUO, CMI and other China-based suppliers can be competitive is if all of them licensed PenTile Matrix from Nouvoyance.

The Hobbit, shot with RED EPIC

Gizmodo:

Peter Jackson, who’s made a few movies, is preparing to shoot another one called The Hobbit. That’s interesting news! What’s also interesting is how he will film it: Thirty uber-expensive RED EPIC cameras. It’s good to be the king.

Each RED EPIC costs $US58,000.
