Samsung and LG Display have plans to build TFT LCD manufacturing plants in China. The South Korean government worried that key engineering know-how would leak to Chinese competitors. Now the government seems very likely to approve of Samsung and LG Display’s plans. The Chinese government is also eager to have both companies set up shop and is reportedly offering them enticing incentives. Locating LCD panel manufacturing capabilities in the middle of what is expected to be the largest LCD TV market in the world becomes a strategic advantage: closer ties with China-based LCD TV integrators, lower cost of distribution, and faster reaction to market conditions. Samsung plans to build a LCD fab in Suzhou while LG Display is eying Guangzhou. The South Korean government is expected to make a decision next month. Source: The Chosun Ilbo

Kingjim’s Pomera DM20 is a portable word processing device with a full QWERTY Japanese keyboard. Word processing is the only thing the DM20 does.
The DM20 sports a 5-inch display with a 640 x 480 resolution, an internal memory of 89MB, a USB connection and a microSD port. I have little doubt text will be very sharp.
The simpleton needs to be connected to a mobile phone to send email via the USB port.
Two AAA batteries power the DM20, which will be available in Japan in December for around JPY35,000 (about US$400).
For significantly less you can get a solution from Palm: a used Palm V and the Palm Portable Keyboard (pictured). With this combo not only do you spend considerably less you can do much more.

Olswang, a media law firm, published its “2009 Convergence Survey” that peeked into e-shopping trends for iPhone users. The survey found iPhone users really like digital content and are willing to pay for them, more so than compared to general online consumers. Here are some tidbits (iPhone vs. General):
Not surprising but quite revealing. David Pogue was right in calling the iPhone and the like as “App Phones”. He invited suggestions on Twitter and @mentalworkout replied. Platforms such as the iPhone and Android were designed to augment the phone’s capability via apps. We got used to app-based function augmentation and now demand it from our app phones. Wired’s Mike Calore is mesmerized:
Put one of Appleās new 27-inch Core i7 iMacs on your desk, and you run the risk of alienating yourself from your friends, co-workers and loved ones… The iMac’s screen is so freaking huge, so bright and crisp, it will render you dumb with child-like glee. You’ll just want to sit there and watch movies all day and night.
