panasonic_viera_tc_p54z1

Panasonic‘s Viera TC-P54Z1 looks absolutely stunning! The 54″ PDP (Plasma Display Panel) TV should sport a 1920 x 1080 pixel format and is just 1″ thick. Just 1″… Panasonic accomplished this by bringing the TV tuner external to the PDP chassis. Not only that the external TV tuner connects to the PDP TV via a wireless connection: simple and elegant, the way I like it.

OQO unveiled its Model 2+ at CES 2009 and the little wonder packs a lot into it. There are two versions with one that runs at 1.33GHz and the faster 1.86GHz. I’ll focus on the faster 1.86GHz version that packs an Intel Atom, 2GB DDR2 RAM, a 120GB HDD or an optional 64GB SSD, WiFi ABG, Bluetooth, 3G Gobi, Ethernet… and a most wonderful 5″ AMOLED (Active Matrix OLED). The picture from Gizmodo look stunning (there’s more at Gizmodo). The 5″ AMOLED display sports a 800 x 480 pixel format (a tiny bit more at 1024 x 600 would have been perfect) and is touch capable. With the 3G Gobi function you can connect via EV-DO or HSPA). And the price? The faster one is $1499, which doesn’t sound too expensive.

sharp_aquos_lc_52bd80u

Sharp‘s AQUOS LC-52BD80U is a 52″ 1080p LCD TV that sports a built-in Blu-ray player. The LC-52BD80U uses the company’s new ASV (Advanced Super View) Superlucent TFT LCD that has an ultra-smooth finish to minimize gloss and reflections while improving brightness and contrast. The 120Hz Fine Motion Enhanced should help minimize motion coming out of the built-in Blu-ray player. The 10-bit ASV LCD panel also provides more than a billion colors and is Deep Color comptabile. The LC-52BD80U has dejudder technology that makes film look like… film.

Although I’m not a fan of integrating other functions such as a Blu-ray player into the TV itself, I think the time might be right for such a thing. I have a Hitachi CRT TV with a built-in VHS player. The VHS player broke many years ago. I haven’t fixed it. But now I think the Blu-ray player will last about as long as the 52″ LCD TV and should not pose the same problem. Just a hunch.

jvc_lt_42wx70

JVC introduced its LT-42WX70 42″ LCD TV at CES on January 7, 2009. The LT-42WX70 sports a very wide color gamut that covers 96% of Adobe RGB and 100% of sRGB. The 1080p-capable LCD TV also has a 4000:1 static contrast ratio, which is very good. The LT-42WX70 also features detacheable tuner box, the TU-CX100, that can be put elsewhere. This is done to slim down the overall thickness of the LT-42WX70 and give you the flexibility and convenience of connecting cables away from the back of the TV itself. If you were mounting the LT-42WX70, the TU-CX100 comes in very handy.

vizio_ecohd_va320e

Vizio‘s EcoHD line of LCD TVs incorporate energy efficient technology to reduce power consumption. The VA320E is a 32″ LCD TV capable of displaying 720p HD content. The pixel format is 1366 x 768 and sports what is called Mega Dynamic Contrast Ratio that brings the stat up to 50,000:1. I’m not exactly sure what the MDCR does but don’t put too much of your buying decision on it. Look for LED backlight and local dimming technologies if you really want to get a TV that feature incredible contrast. The VA320E doesn’t have these features, but if you want energy savings AND money savings the 32″ EcoHD is a good bet at just $449.99.

LG announced three 1080p LCD monitors at CES. LG’s M237WD is the company’s flagship “Full HD” 1080p LCD monitor. The M237WD sports a 23″ TFT LCD and a built-in ATSC tuner. The 23″ LCD features a 1920 x 1080 pixel format and is powered by the company’s f-ENGINE that enhances the picture, optimizes the brightness and color: perfect for watching videos or gaming. The transition toward 1920 x 1080 on LCD monitors combined with a built-in ATSC tuner makes for some difficult categorizations: the M237WD has all the features of a basic LCD TV, except for the exceptionally high pixel count.

sharp_lc_65e77u

Sharp unveiled its AQUOS E series of LCD TVs at CES 2009. There are two lines: E77U and E67U. I will focus on the largest E77U model the LC-65E77U. The LC-65E77U sports the company’s ASV (Advanced Super View) Superlucent TFT LCD, which feature an ultra-smooth finish that reduces hazes and reflectivity. The 64.52″ ASV LCD panel sports a 1920 x 1080 pixel format and boasts a doubled-up frequency of 120Hz called Fine Motion Enhanced, which should dramatically reduce motion blur. With the 1080/24p display capability through one of the four HDMI 1.3 connections the LC-65E77U saves you from having to deal with juddering effects that result from the 3:2 pulldown procedure. The ASV LCD is also 10-bit meaning you’ll be experiencing billions of colors. Contrast ratio is boosted with the company’s Spectral Contrast Engine XD (eXtreme Dark). The price is a hefty but not out of this world $4499.99 and will be available in about 6 months.

Toshiba showcased a prototype 56″ LCD TV that sports a 3840 x 2160 (or Quad Full HD) pixel format. The pixel count is certainly impressive and I am certain that the next evolution in formats will be Quad Full HD. In addition the 56″ monstrous LCD TV features a Cell processor. The company’s Resolution+ technology upconverts 1080p HD video to 3840 x 2160. That should look fantastic!

CES 2009: JVC TeleDock LT-46P500 – 46″ 1080p LCD TV with iPod Dock

JVC TeleDock LT-46P500 Specifications

Display: 45.9″ TFT LCD
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Pixel Format: 1920 x 1080
Frequency: 120Hz
Connectivity: HDMI (3), Component (2), S-Video (2), VGA
Tuner: ATSC, QAM
Availability: April 2009

jvc_teledock

JVC announced its TeleDock line of LCD TVs at CES 2009. There are five models: LT-32P300 (32″), LT-42P300 (42″), LT-46P300 (46″) and two Clear Motion Drive models: LT-42P500 (42″) and LT-46P500 (46″). I’ll focus on the largest and best, the LT-46P500.

The LT-46P500 features a 45.9″ TFT LCD panel with a 1920 x 1080 pixel format allowing it to take 1080p HD video content and display it without scaling. JVC mentioned a dynamic backlight technology and that should improve the contrast ratio somewhat. The LT-46P500 also can display 1080p content at 24fps so film won’t need to get botched during the 3:2 pull-down process and can be seen just the way it was supposed to be seen. The LT-46P500 is also part of the Clear Motion Drive line that sport a 120Hz frequency.

The TeleDock line of LCD TVs from JVC allows you to dock your iPod right in the TV. There is a flip-down iPod dock at the base of the LCD TV. You can play back videos, music and photos. The LT-46P500′s remote, with a similar wheel, can directly control the iPod. How nice is that. The iPod is not only providing all the multimedia but is getting recharged as well, even when the TV is sleeping. I’m not exactly sure if you’ll get really nice video out of the iPod and onto the LT-46P500 without some type of built-in 1080p upconversion.

Not much is known about JVC‘s LT-42B300 42″ LCD TV that packs a built-in Blu-ray player. The 1080p-capable LCD TV incorporates the company’s “new picture improvement technology” and improves contrast via “Dynamic backlight control”, though no contrast ratio stat has been announced. The LT-42B300 has a built-in ATSC and QAM tuners and sports three HDMI with CEC inputs. Look for it way down the road in June of 2009.
