Samsung‘s LN40A550 is a 1080p-capable 40″ LCD TV. The LN40A550 has a nice simple design and sports a 1920 x 1080 pixel format from its PVA (Patterned Vertical Alignment) TFT LCD. The response time is relatively fast at 5ms and the viewing angles are very good at 178/178. It is always best to actually see any TV and test out with your own eyes what a horizontal 178-degree viewing angle looks like. It’s pretty simple: stay in the middle when watching TV. The 39.9″ LCD has a 60Hz frequency, which means that you’ll experience some motion blur when watching fast-moving objects in content such as sports or computer animated movies like Wall-E (especially when Wall-E is trying to free… I won’t spoil anything. This is a great movie. You have to watch it!). If you are very sensitive to motion blur you might need to get an LCD TV that has a 120Hz frequency or a plasma TV. Plasma TVs have extremely fast response times but make sure you watch them in a dark environment to make the most out of the viewing experience. The LN40A550 has an integrated ATSC tuner and comes with three HDMI ports if you want to get HD content via satellite, PlayStation 3, etc. There are 272 customer reviews on Amazon.com with 192 of them giving 5 out of 5 stars. There seemed to have been a HDMI connection problem with Samsung’s own 1080p upconverting DVD player. Some of the positive comments include “100% crystal clear” picture quality, “FiOS HD can be almost too much pretty” and “picture is amazing and sharp” among others. The MSRP on the LN40A550 is $1299.99 but Amazon.com is selling it for just $899.98, one of the best prices I’ve found for this TV.
