For hardcore gamers looking for a 17″ notebook PC, a pixel format of 1920 x 1200 is a must. It is not an option. What Alienware brings to the table is dual GPU capability on its high-end notebooks, like the Area-51 m17x. My guess is that performance is out of this world. But you’ll need to pay for that performance. The ‘Gaming!’ configuration goes for $4119 with the following configuration:
- Core 2 Duo 2.6GHz
- Dual 8800M GTX: A $700 option over a dual 8700M GT configuation.
- Dual 120GB 7200RPM: There is a dual 500GB configuration for $600 extra.
- 1920 x 1200
- 2GB DDR2 667MHz
This is a serious gaming machine. You can configure the m17x with up to 1.5TB of HDD using its Smart Bay. A 2x DL Blu-ray burner can be also be had for $400. What is interesting is that an illuminated keyboard is tied together with the LCD as an option. I know a few hardcore gamers that enjoy playing in dimly lit environments; I would think an illuminated keyboard should be standard for a unit like this.
